Design of Centrifugal Fan: A CFD Approach

D. P. Bhaskar, Dr.A. G. Thakur

Abstract

In this paper, analysis of centrifugal fan is done
to optimize its backward curved blades using Computational
fluid dynamics (CFD). For the numerical analysis, Reynoldsaveraged
Navier-Stokes(RANS)equations with the standard kturbulence
model are discretized with finite volume method.
Simulations have been made with a steady calculation using
the multiple reference frames (MRF) technique to take into
account the impeller-volute interaction. Two design variables are
used to optimize fan performance, volute tongue to reduce flow
separation, recirculation and second is impeller outlet angle (2) to
decrease the wake. As one of the main objectives of optimization,
the efficiency of fan is found improved. The fan performance
curves, i.e., total pressure, power, efficiency versus flow rate
were obtained, showing its behavior over a wide operating
range. Numerical results are compared with the experimental
characteristic curve for each design modification and it has been
found that the optimization process provides a reliable design of
this fan.
