Cloud-based Multimedia System for Social Interaction

Abstract


Mobile devices in recent years are providing more and
more advantages considering content providing facilities. However,
the power of rich content providing reduces the battery lifetime of
the mobile devices. To meet these challenges, high power cloud
computing resources can be taken in support of these mobile
devices. Infrastructure as a service and platform as a service are the
cloud services which can be effectively used in this system. Cloud
based social multimedia is a system where mobile user can watch a
live or offline video from any site and he can share that video with
his friends as well as he can chat with them. We employ a separate
virtual machine to each mobile user which downloads the video on
behalf of the mobile device. The surrogate converts the video stream
by employing encoding facility that matches the mobile user
configurations. Considering the battery life of the mobile device we
partition the video in to smaller video segments and the send to
mobile device, so that battery life of the mobile devices can be saved
efficiently. It plays an important role in saving the battery life of the
mobile device and useful for increasing social interaction on mobile
devices. We use Amazon EC2 for deploying our system.
