Near Filed Communication Based Library Automation System

A. D. Potgantwar, V. M. Wadhai

Abstract

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a standards-based,short range wireless communication technology which validates two-way interaction between electronic devices allowing contactlesstransactions and provides an ease to connect devices with a singletouch. NFC allows exchange of information between devices within10cm range. NFC is an off shot of radio-frequency identification(RFID) which combines interface of smartcard and a reader into asingle device. NFC technology is based on an initiatorand targetwhere initiator starts communication by producing magneticinduction field while target plays the role of receiver by using thismagnetic field to activate itself and performs communication. In alibrary, the borrower picks up a book andgoes tothe librarian. Thelibrarian enters the borrowers and book details into the database andissues the book. While the librarian is busy with this work there arechances were certain malpractices like theft can be conducted. While the librarian is busy withthis work then borrower have towait for issuing the book. In this paper, library automation is toautomatically issue books and return it. In simple words LibraryAutomation can be defined as the use of smart phone to performbasic jobs of library like issue of books, entry of borrowers andbooks details into the library database. Here we have opted to useNDEF for communication, NFC tags and NFC enabled smart phone. With implementation of such a cutting edge technology, anorganization will not only be using the library efficiently but willalso be effective in time.
